General Grant National Memorial

Overlooking the Hudson River from the Morningside Heights section of Manhattan, General Grant National Memorial is the largest tomb in North America. Grant’‘s Tomb (as it is commonly called) is not only the final resting place of the General, but a memorial to his life and acomplishments.



 The Basics


Hours:

General Grant National Memorial is open 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, daily. On Wednesdays, July and August, the memorial is open till 8:30 pm. The site is closed every Thanksgiving Day (3rd Thursday in November, Christmas Day (December 25) and New Year’‘s Day (January 1). The site has been closed due to inclement weather, such as severe snow storms. In those instances, please call ahead.

 Directions

From the north
Take GW Bridge, I-95(Cross Bronx),or I-87(Major Deegan) to Riverside Dr. exit; go south on Riverside Dr. to 122nd St.

From the south
Take Henry Hudson Parkway to 95th St. exit; go north on Riverside Dr. to 122nd St.


 Climate
 

The best time of year to visit is the fall and spring, where temperature are mild. Winters can be extremely cold with high snow drifts. Summers in New York tend to be warm and muggy due to high humidity. Due to its original contruction, the inside of the Tomb is not air conditioned and is drafty in the winter.

 Indoor Activities
 

Site introductory talks are available on the hour, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm.

Special interpretive programs are also offered daily at 10:30 am, 12:30 pm, and 2:30pm. Program themes change daily.


 Nearby Attractions
 

Grant's Memorial was designed to be self guided. However, on the hour, staff will provide an introductory talk about the history and culture of the site. Depending on audience requests, staff will also guide visitors to the more important and interesting features of the site.

Groups may call and request a guided tour or talk for a time that is convenient for them, between the hours of 9:30 am - 4:00 pm.

Park staff is on duty 24 hours. If you are visiting after hours, notify the park so security may greet you with a site brochure and help with any questions or concerns.
