National Parks of New York Harbor

You may be surprised to learn that there are 10 National Parks with 23 unique destinations in New York City and northern New Jersey. The National Parks of New York Harbor include nearly 27,000 acres and welcomes more than 12 million visitors each year. These offer year-round public programs, curriculum-based education, recreational opportunities, natural habitats, and historic buildings.

 Directions

Statue of Liberty National Monument-Ellis Island can be reached by ferries departing from Battery Park in Lower Manhattan and Liberty State Park in New Jersey. Ferry service is available from Manhattan directly to Sandy Hook during the summer. At other times, ferry service is available from Manhattan to nearby locations including Highlands and Atlantic Highlands. Governors Island is open during the summer season and ferry service departs from the Battery Maritime Building, adjacent to the Staten Island Ferry in Lower Manhattan. Other parks may be reached more easily by car.


 Climate
 

The National Parks of New York Harbor are within USDA Climate Zone 7. We recommend layering clothes as weather can change quickly during the day. Summer days can be hot and humid. Winter days can be cold and windy. New York Harbor and coastal zones can be significantly cooler than temperatures in Manhattan.
