Sagamore Hill National Historic Site

Slideshow image

Sagamore Hill was the home of Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States, from 1885 until his death in 1919. From 1902 to 1908 his Summer White House" in Oyster Bay, New York was the focus of international attention. Otherwise it was home to a most remarkable fellow and his interesting family.

 The Basics

Hours:

Sagamore Hill is currently operating on its Winter/Spring schedule. The Roosevelt Home can be viewed by guided tour five days a week - Wednesday through Sunday - from 10am to 4pm. We will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Guided tours are given on the hour and tickets are available at the Visitor Center. Because tours often sell out during weekend and holiday afternoons, we ask visitors to arrive early on these days.

The Visitor Center and Bookstore are open Wednesday through Sunday from 9am to 4:45pm.

The Roosevelt Museum at Old Orchard is also open Wednesday through Sunday from 10am to 4pm. Admission to the building is free, and visitors can view movies and exhibits at their own pace.

Other days Sagamore Hill is closed include Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve & Christmas Day (December 24 & 25) and New Year’‘s Eve & New Year’‘s Day (December 31 & January 1). We are open all other holidays.

The Summer Schedule: Beginning again on Memorial Day and continuing until September, the site will commence its seven day a week operation - opening every day to accommodate heavier visitation.

 Things To Do

Sagamore Hill is a destination for tens of thousands of visitors each year. People who appreciate history really enjoy visiting the site. It provides a fine example of a well-preserved 19th century house, is the only presidential site on Long Island, and is a showcase for one of America's best-loved, larger-than-life personalities.

The site is significant in other ways as well. Its eighty three acres of forested areas, meadows, salt marsh and beach are home to birds, small mammals, turtles, frogs and insects. Paths and a nature trail provide a wonderful place to walk with your family or a pet and to enjoy the scenery.

Sagamore Hill also hosts several special events and programs throughout the year.
