Speckling the shimmering expanse of the St. Lawrence River are hundreds of picturesque isles known as the Thousand Islands, a superb setting for leisurely boat sight-seeing cruises out to historic atrractions or a longer stay in a local cottage.
You'll find some of the best fast-water canoeing during high water on the Brokenstraw Creek between Garland and its confluence with the Allegheny River. Good launch points include the bridge south of Columbus, PA; in the town of Spring Creek; at the route 77 bridge below Spring Creek (watch out for low-hanging cables from here to Garland (12.3 miles); and from the junction of Route 27. From this latter launch to Buckaloons Campground, on the Allegheny River, makes a nice trip (about 12 miles).
