Dramatic mountain crags fall away to reveal forest-flanked lakes in the Lake Placid Region, a stretch of the Adirondacks known for the easy access it affords to year-round outdoor activities.
Designed by Spanish engineer Leonardo Torres Quevedo in 1913 and opened in 1916, Whirlpool Aero Car offers a fantastic view of Niagara's Whirlpool, the Gorge, and the Falls about three kilometers (miles) to the south of the Falls. The round trip, in a suspended 40-passenger car held by six steel cables, is about one kilometer and takes ten minutes. The car has been modernized, with the latest update taking place in 1987.
